Math Mammoth ~ Light Blue Series ~ Grade 2

PhotobucketMembers of The Homeschool Crew were recently given the chance to review one of many products available from Math Mammoth. After taking the placement test on the website, we chose the Light Blue Series, Grade 2, for my 7 and 8 year old, who are pretty much on the same level in math.

We were able to download the curriculum immediately and get started right away. The download consisted of part A and B worktexts, answer keys, tests, cumulative reviews, a worksheet maker and soft pak. (The 7 programs in Soft-Pak (4 math, 1 language arts, 2 testing) offer both on-screen and printable activities in a low-graphic, high content format. It is included FREE when you purchase any full grade set through Kagi store.)

PhotobucketAfter looking through the 2A worktext, I realized we had already covered most of that material, so we began with the 2B worktext. First up was Geometry!

The first lesson went really well, in fact they asked to do more. The next day they asked to math first! This was a blessing to me, math has been a struggle lately for us. My 8 year old has  especially been dreading math each day.

By the end of the week I was amazed by how much they liked Math Mammoth. So I printed out another weeks worth of worksheets. I am blessed to have a laser printer that can go a long way on one toner cartridge, so printing wasn't an issue for us. However they do offer print versions if you do not want to print the sheets yourself. Starting this month, the PDF downloads are enabled for annotation. (Kids can fill them in on the computer and save paper)

The only thing I had a small problem with is that my printer only prints in black and white. Some of the worksheets are supposed to be printed in color, when this was an issue we used colored pencils to see the difference. Sort of a pain, but the benefits greatly outweigh that little issue.

What I liked about Math Mammoth.....

I like that the worktexts are written to the student, so if your child can read well they may be able to self teach. Instructions are on each page, so no teacher book is needed. If you need help with a concept, there are many videos available to help. I like that I can print only what I need, and that I can re-use this level later on with my younger girls. That alone adds up to so much savings for us! No workbooks to buy for each level for each student, thats a value that just cant be beat! A full grade download is just $34.00. Package deals are available too if you need more than one level.

Math Mammoth is mastery oriented, and I prefer this method in teaching math. Once a concept is mastered, there doesn't seem to be a lot of review. But there is a worksheet maker that can be used for review purposes.

All in all I am very impressed with Math Mammoth, and the kids are excited about math again. What more can a mama ask for?
