  What we learned: 

My 11 year old son is in love with Minecraft, so naturally he was excited to try out a Skrafty class! He chose Animals and Their Habitats because he loves all animals and thought it would be fun to build them. 

Getting signed up was easy, he already had a minecraft account so we filled out the whitelist form and he was approved quickly. He is pretty new to minecraft on the PC, but there were many kind kids there who helped him when he needed it. 

I felt it was safe for him to chat on the Skrafty server because the forums are moderated, and not just anyone can join. They must be a member. 

I was so amazed by the intricate designs he came up with for his biomes and habitats, his animals were super cute even if they were squarish.  (Its all blocks in minecraft.) He enjoyed being on there and was eager to move to the next lesson once he finished one.

The lessons themselves were not too long, but full of information needed to complete his tasks. Links to youtube videos that have been pre-screened gave him a look at lots of different animals and their natural environment so he had plenty of inspiration to complete his building. 

I am really excited to see Mystery of History as a class option this fall. I bought Volume 1 a month ago and we start with it next week. I am hoping my younger girls will want to build history too!

Review ~ Moving Beyond The Page ~ Poetry and The Fifty States ~ Age 9-11

There are two things that get my kids excited about learning every time, stories and hands on projects. Moving Beyond the Page has combined these two so perfectly! Last year after we reviewed  Poppy and Life Cycles, the kids asked me to get them more. We ended up getting the entire set for the 7-9 age group.

This year we were so blessed to review a Language Arts Package: Poetry and a Social Studies Package: The Fifty States. These are just two of the units available in the age 9-11 full year package. With this age level the curriculum is written to the student, so for the most part the child is expected to work independently. We did that as much as possible, but with some things my help was still needed. That's OK with me though.

You can use Moving Beyond the Page as a full year curriculum if you choose, or purchase individual units as your kids have interest. It is very flexible to use, and you have different options for purchasing as well. Online versions and physical copies of the curriculum are available. The literature books can be purchased, or you can borrow from the library. With the full year package, all you need to add is math and you are all set for the year.

These two units can be used independently, but were designed to be used together and the activities compliment each other very well. For instance, while we were learning about the different states and regions of the United States (social studies and science), we were also reading poetry from those places at the same time (literature) and we could see how the authors were inspired by what they saw, things they felt, and experiences they had while in that particular area of the country.

While learning about the Southwest the kids followed links online to learn about clay pottery and adobe homes. We used the Sculpey terra cotta clay included in the package to make our own clay pots, home and other creations. This hands on exploration really gets kids excited about learning and trying new things. They also went on Minecraft and built adobe homes there, complete with a desert scene and animals you would find there. THIS is the kind of learning I LOVE to see in our home!



In the Poetry unit we learned what poetry is, Parts of Speech and Rhymes in Poetry, Geography in Poetry, Haiku and Onomatopoeia, Figurative Language and Voice, Art and Poetry, Robert Frost, Writing About  What You Know, and Inspiration. There are lessons included for spelling, student activity pages to print, and reading and questions pages included.

Originally my 11 year old son was the one excited for this unit, and my 9 year old daughter claimed she had no interest at all in poems. By the end of the first week she was joining in and she surprised me one day by writing a poem herself! She said she felt inspired to write it after going outside and seeing beautiful things that not everyone in the world can see where they live. I was beaming with pride of course!

The final project for Poetry was to have a coffee house type of poetry reading, and make food and drinks and invite people over to hear either poems you like or ones you write yourself. This was what got my daughter really excited, she loves to cook and share with her friends. Our "reading" was very informal and didn't last very long before they had eaten all the food and were off to play outside, but the kids got a taste of culture they hadn't experienced before.

My kids all love maps, so the map work in The Fifty States unit was as fun as it was educational. "It didn't even feel like learning, it was just fun" is what they told me.Other lessons included learning state capitals, the Northeast, the Southwest, the Midwest, the Southwest, the West, Alaska and Hawaii, Relationships Among the States, People and the Environment, Analyzing State Data, and the final project is planning a region road trip.



 The first time we played The Scrambled States of America card game they didn't know many of the facts included on each state card, the Capitol and nickname or where every state was located on the map. After playing a few times though the competition really got rough as they wanted to learn more in order to win. This is a game I like playing with them too! At first I was easy on then and let them win but now they can beat me even when I try to win.





As you can tell we all LOVE Moving Beyond the Page around here! I have to say that I really do prefer having the physical version of the curriculum versus the online. There are many benefits to the online version, such as being able to print as many pages as you want. However the curriculum itself is not printable, so you have to use it online. Once you activate a unit is it only available to use for 3 months. You can re-activate it later for use with a younger sibling for half price. With the physical book you will need a curriculum book for each child as their copyright does not allow you to make copies. But I like having that book in hand to use in our portfolios at the end of the year. The kids like showing off their work too. We do not always work on school while at home where we have internet access. But cost wise you cant beat the online version!

Review ~ Reading Kingdom

 Reading Kingdom is an online program designed for kids ages 4-10 and also offers help for struggling readers.  We were blessed to be able to use this program with 3 kids so I chose my 7, 8, and 10 year olds.

There is nothing to download, it is a subscription to the Reading Kingdom website and everything is done online. You must have internet to use it at home, but you can use it anywhere since you can log in anywhere. We can use it at the library, grandmas house, etc. I can even make them do a little school on vacation!

Dr. Marion Blank developed the Reading Kingdom program using what she calls the "6 SIM" 6 Skill Integrated Method which includes sequencing, writing, sounds, meaning, grammar, and comprehension. Read about why this method works here.



Each student starts out with a skills survey to determine the level they should start at based on what they already know. All 3 of mine started out in Letter Land because they had weak keyboarding skills, but they advanced pretty quickly once they got better at it. You can choose to use a keyboard on the screen or the physical keyboard. They tried both ways and preferred the actual keyboard.

If using this program daily a child can finish it in 12-15 months. More advanced users can complete it much sooner. Each lesson lasts an average of 15 minutes, so it is possible to do more than one if a day is missed. I had no problems getting the kids to use it every day, in fact most mornings there was a fight going on about who got to go first!  

I like that the program adapts itself for each student, so they are less likely to become bored by repeating things over and over again. I also love that I get emails with progress reports for each child weekly, so I can let them use the program by themselves and still keep up with what they have been learning. This frees me up to give attention to the million other things going on here daily.

In addition to reading the kids kept telling me that they were learning how to spell better as well. I also noticed that when working with sentences they were required to use a capitol letter at the beginning and punctuation at the end. YES! I feel like I repeat myself daily on that one, perhaps once we start full time school again next week they will be better at that when writing as well!

Skye 7 ~ Its really fun! Even when you get questions wrong its ok. I want to use it every day!

River 8 ~ I like using it because it teaches me to spell and read better, the lessons aren't too long, and its not too hard.

My children really enjoyed being rewarded for reading this past year. Once a month we set a date to go redeem their certificates if they met their reading goals. I required them ALL to meet the goals in order to go, I cant just take one or two kids can I? They helped motivate each other. Review ~ ABeCeDarian Reading Program

We were recently blessed to review a reading program called ABeCeDarian. Our package included the Level A1 Teacher Manual and Student Workbook, Level A2 Teacher Manual and Student Workbook, and the Level B1 Teacher Manual and Student Workbook.












We also received a set of 10 storybooks ($21.50) that go along with Level A and The ABeCeDarian Aesop ($2.50) which is a collection of 11 fables, for use with Level B.

I originally intended to use level A-1 with my newly turned 4 year old, although the website states it is for ages 5 to adult. It was worth a try, but she really showed no interest other than scribbling on the pages. So for now Level A is on the shelf until she is ready.

My 6 year old was ready for Level B-1 according to the placement test on the website. This made her feel very smart and grown up to be able to skip two books and go on to the third! She wanted to read each and every storybook herself, and she did a very good job. Or so I first thought.....

After reading through the teacher manuals for both levels I discovered she was lacking in the fluency department. I didn't want to back up and do Level A with her after telling her she didn't have to, so we practiced reading  the storybooks several times. After using some of the tips given I saw dramatic improvement in a short amount of time in her fluency. She needed to be reading the books effortlessly instead of stopping to sound out random words and disjointing the sentences.



Part of Level B was review because she knows some sound blends, but practice makes perfect, right? The workbook pages were fun for her to complete. She has always been a workbook kind of kid and these lessons are kept short and to the point.

The Reading Chain and Sorting Words, with the same sound but different spelling, pages were the most helpful for her. Its confusing when suddenly the Long E sound can be read/spelled with ee, ea, ie, e, y, ey, and e-e. No wonder people struggle so much with spelling! It was hard enough to figure out how to read it, and then you have to spell it right too? Whew!

She has definitely progressed from reading CVC (consonant vowel consonant) and words that can be read phonetically to reading more complex words since using ABeCeDarian. I like that the pages are black and white without distracting pictures that cause the child to guess at the words instead of read them. I like that the books are spiral bound so I can tear out a page at a time for her so she doesn't feel overwhelmed by seeing the whole book.

The Teacher Manuals are a must for this program, they walk you through each lesson step by step. There is no need for planning other than reading the next days lesson ahead of time so you are familiar with it. This takes just a few minutes.


I feel like this program is very effective if used the way it is supposed to be, and it is affordable too. Teacher Manuals are $28.50 per level and are re-useable for other children. Level A workbooks are $12.25 each and Level B workbooks are $10.25 each and are consumable.

Primary Arts of Language from Institute for Excellence in Writing

I have always loved to read, spelling was a fun and easy subject, and writing seemed to come pretty naturally for me. I thought when I started homeschooling that teaching these things to my kids would be easy, I thought they would just pick it right up like I did. I couldn't have been more wrong!

Finding a language arts program that works well for my kids has been a challenge to say the least. We have tried many programs, and honestly I was afraid of trying yet another program, especially Primary Arts of Language (PAL) from Institute For Excellence in Writing (IEW). Just the name sounded complicated and scary to me. Is that weird? Yea well I am weird, so anyhow after reading a few raving reviews from others I took the plunge and dove headfirst into PAL with my 6 year old.

There are 2 components in the PAL program, Reading and Writing. You can use the reading by itself but if you want to have a complete language arts program you should use them both together. They compliment each other beautifully! The lessons are based on the teaching method Anna Ingham used called the Blended Sound Sight Program.

I could write a book by going into great detail about this program, there is a lot to it and it can seem overwhelming when you first look at it. A friend suggested I first watch the DVD's that come with the program. She was so right, after watching I felt much less overwhelmed and I was ready to start preparing to teach. I spent a weekend putting together the first few phonetic games and reading over the first few lessons. I also gathered up the supplies needed for both myself and my daughter and put them in a little tote so they would be handy when we need them. Lastly I put all the other parts of the program into a nice lined basket we had to keep everything together and organized in one place. Both of those ideas were from that great friend mentioned earlier.

What does a typical day using PAL look like?

We begin our school day with prayer, and we do a few subjects together as a group. After I get my older kids busy with independent work I start working with my 6 year old by herself. We are currently on lesson 16.

Her lesson begins with poetry. I read a poem to her, this same poem is used for a few lessons in a row. We discuss it and do an activity such as underlining sounds she has learned in the words.

We then move on to journal time. I do the writing, she tells me what to write. Just a short sentence or two is fine, the lessons are supposed to be short and snappy to keep the child's interest high.

Then she completes a printing lesson page from the writing book. New letters are first practiced on a dry erase board. Letter stories were used in the beginning to introduce the letter sounds and also how to write them properly. I cant rave enough on how wonderfully this method works! I wish we had used this program from day 1 of homeschooling!

We read a story together, stories are included in the first few lessons, but any story can be used. We discuss the characters, the plot, etc. and she summarizes the story orally.

Back to the reading book, new sounds are introduced, games are played to reinforce the new sounds and to review ones already learned.

We then add stickers to the phonetic farm! She loves this part! We review the sounds already added that she has learned.



A fun worksheet is done at the end. She can do it by herself usually after I read the instructions. While she works on this I help or redirect the older kids. An hour or so is all that is needed every day. Later in the day we may get out the farm folder again and review, play a game or two, read some words or have a "spelling test" on the sounds she has learned so far. Soon we will finish up with part one and will add spelling lessons to her day.


All About Spelling is used in part 2 of the writing program. We are not quite there so I have not yet used it with my 6 year old yet. I did use this program 2 years ago with my older children and it was very easy to use and they enjoyed it and learned a lot. I'm looking forward to using it again.

What I LOVE about PAL.....

The included DVD's are an excellent tool to help me prepare to teach. All confusion and feelings of being overwhelmed were wiped away.
The Teacher Manuals lay everything out in order, I simply follow the program and watch in amazement as my daughter learns!
The lessons are short, although there are many parts to each days work. She stays interested, is never bored, and if she does start feeling overwhelmed we can  stop and take a break and come back to it later.
Side notes of encouragement are in the teacher manuals. They seem to be strategically placed to be read just when I need them!
PAL includes reading, writing, and spelling. It is complete and thorough.
The games are simple but so effective! Jill encourages us to make up our own games for other subjects too.
The student books are printable, so when I use this again in 2 years with my 3 year old all I need to buy is another Phonetic Farm folder. The games are re-useable too!

Is there anything I dislike about PAL?

Honestly no, it is THE BEST program I have ever used. In fact we ditched what we were using in the beginning of this year. I asked her if she wanted to use it too and she said NO WAY MOM!

My only words of warning are...
This program does require some prep time. Be prepared to spend a few days getting ready to use it.
You need a good printer and lots of ink to print the workbooks, but they do offer printed books as an option.
One on one time is needed in every lesson, if you have older or younger children try to find a time when you can get through at least part of the lesson without interruption. I have both so I do understand how hard this can be!

Activity Bags ~ Preschool and Reading Games in a Bag

I spent a weekend making some of the activities from Preschool Activities in a Bag eBook 1 and Preschool Activities in a Bag eBook 2 from ActivityBags.com for my 3 year old daughter. This is how she starts each morning now, digging through her basket of goodies and picking one to play with while I get school started with the older kids.

E-book 1 has 34 activities and E-book 2 has 33.

You can organize a swap and share the fun with other moms of preschoolers! Most of my friends have older children so I didn't try to organize a swap, but I plan to participate in an online swap in the near future.

Each E-book contains complete instructions and masters to print for each game. Downloading the ebooks was quick and simple. I was able to look through both books right away and choose a few that I thought she would like. A lot of the games use materials that you already have around the house, or are inexpensive to buy. You are encouraged to substitute other items you may have for what is suggested. She enjoyed the first few bags so much that I made her quite a few more. I plan on making some to give as gifts this Christmas.

Alpha Spoons is one of her favorite bags. This one is such a cute idea, she loves telling me the sounds she knows already as she picks them up.

She can do every bag by herself and doesn't need help, but its always more fun to share with a sister! I really love how independent this makes her feel. She told me she could do it herself the very first day when I asked if she needed me.

My 6 year old enjoyed doing the activities with her when she was finished with her school for the day.

She really loves the magnetic fishing game bag and so does everyone else. This game does distract everyone in the room when she gets it out. Who can help watching a cute little girl catch colorful fish and squeal with delight every time?

We used a dowel rod we already had so her pole is longer than the recommended size. We think its more realistic since we fish with real poles in the river.










We have all enjoyed catching fish, even Daddy!

We also made activity bags for the older kids from Reading Games in a Bag ebook 1. I started out by making 2 of the games to see how they liked them. I ended up making all but two of the 20 games included in this ebook. Yep they love them that much! The reading games do not require many extra materials to make them, just a printer, paper, a laminator or contact paper, and a few buttons or pennies and a die. Colored paper is recommended, but I used plain white paper for some of the games.

We used these games to help strengthen reading skills with my 8 and 9 year olds and  to practice beginning reading skills with my 6 year old. These made great "Fun Fridays" games! They are also handy to take along to the dentist office or anywhere the kids need some entertaining while you wait.

Beginning, Middle, End was voted the silliest game ever! The laughs and giggles go on and on as they create silly sentences. 

The Solving Mazes Games were a hit with everyone including my 3 year old. Or is that Daddy doing the maze? Hmmm...

My 8 and 9 year old like playing the Sound Trail Game with my 6 year old. This is great phonics  practice for her!  

The State Abbreviations Game is the perfect way to recall the information they learned last year. (They cant cheat using the "world" wall map behind them either!)
