Reveiw ~ Institute For Excellence In Writing (IEW) TWSS / SWI A

 photo homepage_logo_zps79f1e89a.jpg

We were so blessed to be chosen to review two wonderful products from Institute For Excellence in Writing. I received Teaching Writing Structure and Style (TWSS), and Student Writing Intensive Level A (SWI-A). This level is for grades 3-5, so two of my children fell into that category.

For years I have heard other homeschool moms rave about how wonderful IEW is, how user friendly it is, and how students begin to love writing while using it. I couldnt wait to try it out ourselves!

The DVD's in both sets are taught by Andrew Pudewa, he is such a gentle teacher and very understanding of the needs of the children he is teaching. I loved his sense of humor and the personal stories he threw in along the way of successes and failures. His tips and advice are truly golden, this man knows his stuff! Watch a great interview with him below.

The first step in using this set was for me to find some time to watch the first DVD in the Teaching Writing Structure and Style. Alone. I wanted to take notes and really understand how to teach the program and make this as fun as possible for my reluctant little writers. I got that opportunity the following Sunday evening thanks to my wonderful husband.

I learned SO MUCH just from the first DVD. I do not recall learning to write in school, but obviously I did. I had no idea how to teach someone else to write. I felt like I knew where to start and I was excited to start the kids on Student Writing Intensive Level A after watching the DVD's.

Looking back at my own notes, the best tips I took away from Mr. Pudewa were:
1. Don't worry about their handwriting, let them be messy. Save that for the final draft.
2. Don't worry about their spelling, that can be fixed in the editing stage later.
3. Don't expect your kids to know what to write about, give them something to write about. Any subject of interest works just fine.

The first day we used Student Writing Intensive I explained to the kids that this was a whole new way of learning how to write, and that they really needed to give it a try. They reluctantly agreed and sat down to watch it with paper and pencil in hand. I should have taken a picture of their faces just for laughs!

Their first assignment was about sea snakes. This got my little science and animal lovers attention.  As it turns out sea snakes are pretty interesting, so writing down keywords from each sentence didnt seem too hard.

My son (10 years old) has some learning disabilities in language arts so he appreciated it when Mr.Pudewa said it was OK to write short sentences. When he was instructed to combine two sentences using the word "which" my son felt like it was too hard to do. I encouraged him to say the sentence he wanted to write out loud and then write what he said. We had some tears and feelings of being overwhelmed, but after it was all over he actually said it wasnt too bad, and he felt like he could do it easier the next time. What joyful words to hear!

My daughter (8 years old) got through the first assignment pretty easily. She was ready to move on before her brother, but to keep things simple she waited patiently while I worked with him alone. Her only complaint was that she wanted everything she wrote to be perfect, but Mr. Pudewa tells the kids not to erase anything. If they make a mistake, simply draw a line through it and move on. He has them write on every other line so there is room for editing, this drove her nuts. He also told them to write with pen not pencils. I had to encourage her to try these new ideas and see how it worked out in the end. She was pretty pleased with the results.

Just for fun I also let my daughter who just finished first grade (age 7) try it out. She did great at picking out key words and telling me sentences out loud. She was really overwhelmed by trying to write it down however, so I didnt push that. I feel like she will be ready for it in the coming year though.

As their teacher I have really enjoyed using IEW! I felt from the beginning that I was given the knowledge and tools I needed in order to teach them, and this made all the difference in the world for me. I loved having Mr. Pudewa be the teacher, he is just fun to listen to. I highly recommend Teaching Writing Structure and Style for any parent who feels overwhelmed by trying to teach writing. There are many other levels to begin with if Level A is too young for your children. I learned right along with my kids, and that is how we like to learn!

Teaching Writing Structure and Style can be purchased from the Institute For Excellence in Writing website for $169.00. It includes 10 DVD's. Six contain instruction for the teacher, one contains tips and tricks, and the last 3 contain sample student workshops for 3 different age levels. Also included is a seminar workbook with sample lessons, word lists, syllabus and more. Its about 160 pages in a nice 3 ring binder.

Student Writing Intensive Level A can be purchased for $109.00. It includes 4 instructional DVD's for the student and a Structure and Style overview DVD for the parent, a 3 ring binder with dividers and a student packet with about 100 pages full of handouts, notes, and a scope and sequence. If you use this with more than one student they will each need their own set of student materials.

If you plan on purchasing both sets they are available as a bundle for $249.00.

Essentials In Writing (EIW) Grade 3

Essentials in Writing Grade 3 photo EIW3rdgrade_zpsa6a32eaa.jpg

Writing is something I enjoy doing, but I have always felt intimidated teaching it to my kids. I have no idea why? I was very glad to have the chance to review  Essentials In Writing  mostly because the lessons are taught on DVD.

I chose Essentials In Writing Grade 3  for my 8 and 9 year old because that is the ages it is recommended for. It turned out to be the perfect level! We started formal grammar lessons this year, but have went slowly so they wouldnt feel overwhelmed. Essentials in Writing seems to have picked up right where we left off but has taken them on to a new level because along with the grammar we also started the composition lessons.

Essentials in Writing is considered a full language arts curriculum, and I agree unless you have a child who is having a hard time with spelling. We continued our spelling lessons while using EIW. Matthew Stephens does a great job of explaining each concept in the DVD lessons. See a sample lesson from the 3rd grade level below...

The DVD does have a minor issue. The volume for the screen where you choose a lesson is very loud, while the volume for the lesson itself is low. This was not a real problem but I wanted to mention it.

Each lesson has a worksheet or two to go along with it, but only one worksheet a day is necessary. Some days they asked to do more and some days one was plenty. I really appreciate that the level of writing is not overwhelming each day. My kids are resistant to a lot of writing, but I had very few complaints while using EIW. It took an average of 30 minutes to complete a lesson, that is very do-able for us! EIW has suggestions for how to use the program as well.

What is taught on the DVD?

The Table of Contents can be found on the website. There are 2 DVD's, one contains the grammar (lessons 1-27) and one contains composition (lessons 28-52). I liked having them separated, some families may not need the grammar lessons or may use that part for review only. We used both parts at the same time because some of the grammar was review for us. You can see what each lesson is about in the 3rd grade syllabus. See a sample worksheet from Lesson 25A here.

What I like about Essentials In Writing...

I love love love that the lessons are taught on DVD!
Matthew makes the lessons easy to understand and fun.
The worksheets are included and come in downloadable PDF form, I can use them again with my younger children. This is always a MAJOR bonus for us!
EIW is SO easy to use!
It is affordable! Each level is $40.00 and includes the DVD set and downloadable worksheets. That is very reasonable, plus I can re-use it so its an even better deal.
I feel like the lessons are gentle yet thorough, I have been very pleased with the entire program.

If printing is an issue for you, the workbooks can be purchased for $20.00 each.

Essentials in Writing has a program for grades 1-12 along with High School Elective courses. We have found such a good fit for our family, I plan to purchase 4th grade for next year!

Primary Arts of Language from Institute for Excellence in Writing

Photobucket

I have always loved to read, spelling was a fun and easy subject, and writing seemed to come pretty naturally for me. I thought when I started homeschooling that teaching these things to my kids would be easy, I thought they would just pick it right up like I did. I couldn't have been more wrong!

Finding a language arts program that works well for my kids has been a challenge to say the least. We have tried many programs, and honestly I was afraid of trying yet another program, especially Primary Arts of Language (PAL) from Institute For Excellence in Writing (IEW). Just the name sounded complicated and scary to me. Is that weird? Yea well I am weird, so anyhow after reading a few raving reviews from others I took the plunge and dove headfirst into PAL with my 6 year old.

There are 2 components in the PAL program, Reading and Writing. You can use the reading by itself but if you want to have a complete language arts program you should use them both together. They compliment each other beautifully! The lessons are based on the teaching method Anna Ingham used called the Blended Sound Sight Program.

Andrew Pudewa does an excellent job explaining how the PAL program works in this video.

I could write a book by going into great detail about this program, there is a lot to it and it can seem overwhelming when you first look at it. A friend suggested I first watch the DVD's that come with the program. She was so right, after watching I felt much less overwhelmed and I was ready to start preparing to teach. I spent a weekend putting together the first few phonetic games and reading over the first few lessons. I also gathered up the supplies needed for both myself and my daughter and put them in a little tote so they would be handy when we need them. Lastly I put all the other parts of the program into a nice lined basket we had to keep everything together and organized in one place. Both of those ideas were from that great friend mentioned earlier.

What does a typical day using PAL look like?

We begin our school day with prayer, and we do a few subjects together as a group. After I get my older kids busy with independent work I start working with my 6 year old by herself. We are currently on lesson 16.

Her lesson begins with poetry. I read a poem to her, this same poem is used for a few lessons in a row. We discuss it and do an activity such as underlining sounds she has learned in the words.

We then move on to journal time. I do the writing, she tells me what to write. Just a short sentence or two is fine, the lessons are supposed to be short and snappy to keep the child's interest high.

Then she completes a printing lesson page from the writing book. New letters are first practiced on a dry erase board. Letter stories were used in the beginning to introduce the letter sounds and also how to write them properly. I cant rave enough on how wonderfully this method works! I wish we had used this program from day 1 of homeschooling!

We read a story together, stories are included in the first few lessons, but any story can be used. We discuss the characters, the plot, etc. and she summarizes the story orally.

Back to the reading book, new sounds are introduced, games are played to reinforce the new sounds and to review ones already learned.

We then add stickers to the phonetic farm! She loves this part! We review the sounds already added that she has learned.

A fun worksheet is done at the end. She can do it by herself usually after I read the instructions. While she works on this I help or redirect the older kids. An hour or so is all that is needed every day. Later in the day we may get out the farm folder again and review, play a game or two, read some words or have a "spelling test" on the sounds she has learned so far. Soon we will finish up with part one and will add spelling lessons to her day.

All About Spelling is used in part 2 of the writing program. We are not quite there so I have not yet used it with my 6 year old yet. I did use this program 2 years ago with my older children and it was very easy to use and they enjoyed it and learned a lot. I'm looking forward to using it again.

    What I LOVE about PAL.....

The included DVD's are an excellent tool to help me prepare to teach. All confusion and feelings of being overwhelmed were wiped away.
The Teacher Manuals lay everything out in order, I simply follow the program and watch in amazement as my daughter learns!
The lessons are short, although there are many parts to each days work. She stays interested, is never bored, and if she does start feeling overwhelmed we can  stop and take a break and come back to it later.
Side notes of encouragement are in the teacher manuals. They seem to be strategically placed to be read just when I need them!
PAL includes reading, writing, and spelling. It is complete and thorough.
The games are simple but so effective! Jill encourages us to make up our own games for other subjects too.
The student books are printable, so when I use this again in 2 years with my 3 year old all I need to buy is another Phonetic Farm folder. The games are re-useable too!

Is there anything I dislike about PAL?

Honestly no, it is THE BEST program I have ever used. In fact we ditched what we were using in the beginning of this year. I asked her if she wanted to use it too and she said NO WAY MOM!

My only words of warning are...
This program does require some prep time. Be prepared to spend a few days getting ready to use it.
You need a good printer and lots of ink to print the workbooks, but they do offer printed books as an option.
One on one time is needed in every lesson, if you have older or younger children try to find a time when you can get through at least part of the lesson without interruption. I have both so I do understand how hard this can be!
